Professor Ree accuses the chinese concert, the chinese orchestra as not being authentic. I first would like to say i some what agree with Professor Ree because authentic music can be modernized and interesting as its original piece. This is becasue change and adaptation must be accounted for, and that things can not always remian the same throughout history. However, what makes the chinese orchestra not authentic was, it does not follow the ancient traditions which it is derived from. For instance the musicans purpose for playing is not for ritual value, but for entertainment. They perform for tourist, which changes the music by simplifiying it instead of keeping the original versions of the ritualistic song. Also the balance of instruements change from focusing on rythm to melody.
The western scholars also accuse chinese orchestra of being unauthentic because they use western instruments and borrow their compositions. They take traditional music and add a modern feel to make the music up to date with time. This turns the western scholars away from the modern chinese orchestra because it sounds to similar to western music and lack traditional qualities.
